If you’re new to a CDL school, one of the first skills you’ll be challenged with is backing a semi-trailer.
While it might seem like a slow, simple maneuver compared to highway driving, it’s one of the most dangerous parts of operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), and one of the biggest sources of costly accidents in the trucking industry.
Let’s look at why backing safely matters and how to prepare for safe backing.
Why Backing Deserves Your Full Attention
The National Safety Council reports that 25% of all truck collisions are caused by backing-related incidents and poor backing techniques.
Every year, thousands of injuries happen because of improper backing, most involving pedestrians or cyclists who never saw the truck moving toward them.
Here’s the reality:
- In most backing crashes, the truck driver and carrier are considered “at fault”, especially if injuries or fatalities occur.
- Even without injuries, these incidents cost the industry hundreds of millions in property damage and cargo loss annually.
- A single large claim—or multiple small ones—can drive up insurance premiums or even lead to non-renewed policies, putting a company’s future at risk.
That’s why backing isn’t just a test you need to pass, it’s a skill that will protect your safety, your career, and your company’s bottom line.
Preparing for a Safe Backing Maneuver
Whether you’re practicing at CDL school or parking at a customer’s dock, a safe backing maneuver starts long before you put the truck in reverse.
1. Adjust and Clean Your Mirrors
- Your mirrors are your lifeline. Make sure they’re clean, properly adjusted, and free of water, dirt, or frost before moving.
- Learn where your blind spots are—and remember, a mirror adjustment at 55 mph may need to be slightly different when you’re maneuvering slowly in a yard.
2. Use a Spotter Whenever Possible
- A trained spotter can see what you can’t.
- Agree on clear hand signals before starting—no guessing.
- Keep the spotter in view at all times. If you lose sight of them, stop immediately.
3. Use Reference Points
- Landmarks like painted lines, dock edges, or trailer shadows help you track your position.
- Practice using fixed points to anticipate trailer swing and tire tracking.
4. GOAL – Get Out And Look
- It’s not just a safety slogan—it’s a proven accident-prevention method.
- Get out and check for people, obstacles, uneven ground, or overhead hazards before committing to your maneuver.
5. Move Slowly and Avoid Distractions
- The slower you go, the more time you have to react.
- Never back while using a phone, CB, or any other distraction.

Situations to Avoid
Even an experienced driver should think twice in these scenarios:
- Backing across a street or highway – too many variables, too much risk.
- Backing up in traffic – if you miss a turn, find a safe turnaround spot.
- Standing on the step for a better view – unsafe and against most company policies.
- Losing patience – rushing is a leading cause of preventable accidents.
Remember, if you develop good habits in CDL school, you’ll not only pass your exam—you’ll prevent accidents, keep your CSA score clean, and help protect your company’s insurance costs.
