How to Shift a Manual Transmission in a Semi-Truck
When it comes to transmissions, I’m old school. I enjoy driving a manual because it’s more engaging and makes you feel connected to the vehicle.
Manual transmissions are becoming less common, and many younger drivers have never operated one. For new truck drivers, however, learning to shift a manual semi-truck can still be an extremely valuable skill.
Today, we’ll cover several tips for mastering a manual transmission in a semi-truck, including:

How Does a Manual Transmission Work?
The overall purpose of a manual transmission is the same as an automatic transmission: It transfers power from the engine to the wheels.
The main difference is that a manual transmission gives the driver control over each gear change. You use the clutch pedal and gearshift to determine when the truck shifts and which gear it uses.
The clutch is mounted between the engine and transmission. Pressing the clutch pedal disengages the clutch, temporarily separating the engine’s power from the transmission. This allows you to move the shifter into another gear.
If you have never driven a manual car, don’t worry. Driving a manual semi-truck is significantly different, and previous experience with a passenger vehicle does not necessarily mean you will immediately know how to shift a commercial truck.
Understanding the Clutch Brake
One major difference between a manual passenger vehicle and a manual semi-truck is the clutch brake.
The clutch brake is engaged when you press the clutch pedal completely to the floor. It is designed to help stop the transmission’s input shaft so you can place the truck into gear from a complete stop.
This is an important distinction: The clutch brake should only be used when the truck is stationary.
Do not press the clutch pedal completely to the floor while the truck is moving. Doing so can cause unnecessary wear or damage to the clutch brake. While shifting a moving truck, you generally press the clutch pedal approximately halfway to three-quarters of the way down.
Mastering this process takes practice. Grinding gears and stalling are common when you are first learning. Begin practicing on flat ground until you become comfortable with the clutch, accelerator, and gearshift.
How to Upshift a Semi-Truck
Every truck has an appropriate RPM range for shifting. When you are first learning, watch the tachometer to determine when to shift. With experience, you will begin recognizing the proper shift points by listening to the engine.
Here are the four basic steps for upshifting:
- Release the accelerator, press the clutch pedal approximately halfway to three-quarters of the way down, and shift into neutral.
- Release the clutch pedal and allow the engine speed to decrease to the RPM needed for the next gear.
- When the RPM reaches the appropriate range, press the clutch pedal again and shift into the next higher gear.
- Release the clutch pedal smoothly while pressing the accelerator.
This may feel like a lot to coordinate at first. With sufficient behind-the-wheel training, however, the movements will become more natural.
How to Downshift a Semi-Truck
Downshifting may be necessary when slowing for traffic, preparing to enter a curve or approaching a hill.
Selecting a lower gear before traveling downhill is especially important because it helps control the truck’s speed without relying entirely on the service brakes. Riding the brakes down a long or steep grade can cause them to overheat. This can lead to brake fade and a dangerous loss of braking ability.
Here are the four basic steps for downshifting:
- Release the accelerator, press the clutch pedal approximately halfway to three-quarters of the way down, and shift into neutral.
- Release the clutch pedal and lightly press the accelerator to raise the engine speed. A lower gear requires higher RPM at the same road speed, so this step helps match the engine speed to the transmission.
- When the RPM reaches the appropriate range, press the clutch pedal again and shift into the lower gear.
- Release the clutch pedal smoothly and apply the accelerator as needed.
Proper timing and RPM matching are essential for a smooth downshift.
What Is Double Clutching?
Double clutching means pressing and releasing the clutch twice during a single gear change: once when shifting out of the current gear and again when shifting into the next gear.
The upshifting and downshifting processes described above both use double clutching.
In simple terms, you are manually matching the engine RPM to the truck’s road speed. When the speed and RPM are properly matched, the shifter should move smoothly into the desired gear.
The basic process is:
- Release the accelerator and press the clutch pedal approximately halfway to three-quarters of the way down.
- Move the shifter out of the current gear and into neutral, and then release the clutch pedal.
- Allow the RPM to decrease for an upshift or lightly press the accelerator to raise the RPM for a downshift.
- Press the clutch pedal again and move the shifter into the next gear.
- Release the clutch pedal smoothly and return to the accelerator.
Floating gears is a different technique in which the driver shifts without using the clutch. New drivers should focus on the double-clutching method taught by their CDL instructor and required during CDL skills testing.
Tips for Smoother Shifting
Keep these tips in mind while learning to shift:
- Listen to the engine and watch the tachometer so the RPM does not drop too low.
- Release the accelerator while changing gears.
- Release the clutch smoothly and maintain enough RPM to prevent the truck from stalling.
- Never force the shifter. If you feel significant resistance, the engine speed and road speed are probably not properly matched.
- Practice consistently. Smooth shifting depends on timing, coordination and experience.
Why Learn to Drive a Manual Semi-Truck?
If you complete your CDL skills test in a truck with an automatic transmission, your CDL will generally include an “E” restriction prohibiting you from operating a commercial motor vehicle with a manual transmission.
That restriction can limit the trucks you are qualified to drive and the jobs available to you. This is especially important for drivers interested in employers that operate flatbeds, tankers, vocational trucks or older equipment.
