Real CDL Journeys: Building Confidence Alongside Pre-Test Jitters

Real CDL Journeys: Ale | Part 2 – Struggle: Pre-Test Jitters & Building Confidence

The CDL test is getting closer, and Ale is feeling the pressure.

In Part 2 of Real CDL Journeys: Ale, we follow her through the final stretch of training at the CNS Driver Training Center & CDL School in Lancaster, PA. The fear is still there. The nerves are real. But this time, something is different.

Ale is starting to believe she can do this.

That belief did not happen overnight. It came through long training days, mistakes, frustration, instructor feedback, and learning that confidence behind the wheel is built one detail at a time.

From Self-Doubt to “I Can Do This”

At the beginning of her CDL journey, Ale felt confident heading into her permit test. Then she failed. After failing a couple more times, that confidence turned into doubt.

She questioned whether she was the right person for this.

That moment is something many CDL students can relate to. Training can challenge you in ways you may not expect. Sometimes the hardest part is not the truck, the gears, or the road. Sometimes the hardest part is getting out of your own head.

But Ale kept showing up.

As she continued training, she started to trust herself more. With every session, every correction, and every repeat attempt, her confidence began to grow.

Eventually, her mindset shifted from, “I don’t think I can do this,” to “I can do this.”

Confidence Comes From Repetition

One of the biggest changes Ale’s trainers noticed was her comfort level behind the wheel.

In the beginning, everything felt new. The size of the truck. The clutch. The mirrors. The trailer. The pressure of remembering each step.

But after more time in the truck, her trainer saw a major difference.

Her comfort level from one training session to the next was “night and day.” She became more comfortable moving the truck, working through backing maneuvers, releasing the clutch, finding the catch point, and controlling the vehicle with fewer nerves.

That is one of the most important lessons for future CDL students:

Confidence is not something you wait to feel before you start. Confidence is something you build by doing the work.

The Small Details Matter

One of the most important moments in this episode came during backing practice.

Ale was struggling to see the back of her trailer during one of the maneuvers. Her instructor asked a simple question:

How are your mirrors?

That small adjustment made a big difference.

In CDL training, little details can have a major impact. Seat position, mirror placement, line of sight, clutch control, and setup all matter. What works for one driver may not work for another. Your mirrors need to match your height, your position, and what you need to see.

For Ale, adjusting the mirrors helped her better understand where the trailer was and how to maneuver it.

It was a reminder that success in CDL training is not just about “driving the truck.” It is about learning how to set yourself up correctly before you move.

Getting Out of Your Own Head

Ale also shared one of her biggest struggles: when she makes a mistake, she sometimes keeps thinking about it long after the moment has passed.

That happened during a backing session. She was still thinking about what went wrong, and when it was time to go on the road, that frustration followed her.

That is a very real part of training.

CDL students are learning several skills at once: pre-trip inspection, backing, shifting, road driving, decision-making, and vehicle control. When one part goes wrong, it can be easy to let that mistake affect the next part.

But training is also about learning how to reset.

A mistake during backing does not have to ruin your road drive. A missed shift does not mean you cannot pass. A tough day does not mean you are not cut out for trucking.

It means you are learning.

Preparing for the Final Training Session

As test day approached, Ale wanted to use her final training session to go over everything.

She focused on the areas that made her most nervous, including:

  • Backing maneuvers
  • Road driving
  • Shifting and downshifting
  • Pre-trip inspection
  • Staying calm under pressure

She said she felt good about the pre-trip, but she was also trying not to overthink it. That balance matters. Students need to know the material, but they also need to stay calm enough to remember it.

Her trainer explained that the pre-trip checklist helps students work through the required items. The key is not just knowing what the parts are, but knowing what to say about each item and why it matters.

Learning to Think Through the Challenge

Another major part of Ale’s growth was learning how to think outside the box.

CDL training is not about memorizing one perfect version of every maneuver. It is about understanding the truck, the trailer, your setup, and your options.

Instructors help students learn how to think through problems instead of simply reacting to them.

That matters because real driving requires decision-making.

A professional driver needs to be able to adjust, correct, reset, and stay calm. Whether it is a backing maneuver, a missed gear, a tight turn, or a stressful traffic situation, CDL training helps students learn how to think through each challenge safely.

Pre-Test Jitters Are Normal

With the CDL test right around the corner, Ale was nervous.

She knew the test would be a challenge. She knew there was pressure. She knew there was a chance she might not pass on the first try.

But she also reminded herself not to be too hard on herself if things did not go perfectly.

That mindset is important.

The CDL test is a major milestone, but it is also part of the learning process. Students should prepare seriously, listen to their instructors, and do their best. But they should also remember that one test does not define their entire future.

Ale’s nerves were real, but so was her growth.

Reassurance Matters

One of the most meaningful parts of Ale’s journey was hearing her instructors tell her she was doing well.

She admitted that she did not always feel confident. But when instructors told her, “You got this,” it helped.

That reassurance mattered because it came from people who had watched her grow. They saw her progress. They saw her comfort level improve. They saw her become more capable behind the wheel.

Sometimes students cannot see their own progress clearly. That is where strong instructors make a difference.

They do not just teach the skills. They help students recognize when they are becoming ready.

“I Can Move It. I Can Drive It.”

By the end of this episode, Ale reflects on how far she has come.

She describes the journey as long, but she also says she feels more confident. She can now get in the truck and say:

“I can move it. I can drive it.”

That is a powerful shift.

At one point, she never thought she would be able to do this. Now, with the test approaching, she is still nervous—but she is no longer the same student who started the process full of doubt.

She has struggled. She has learned. She has grown.

And now, she can say:

“I got this.”

Thinking About Earning Your CDL?

Ale’s journey shows the real side of CDL training.

Fear is normal. Struggle is normal. Mistakes are normal.

But with the right training, support, repetition, and mindset, confidence starts to grow.

At the CNS Driver Training Center & CDL School in Lancaster, PA, students learn more than how to operate a truck. They learn how to prepare, how to think through challenges, how to build confidence, and how to take the next step toward becoming a professional driver.

If you have ever asked yourself, “Can I really do this?” Ale’s story is proof that the answer can be yes.
