What the federal crackdown revealed
On August 31, 2026, federal officials announced emergency removals affecting approximately 110 commercial driver training providers. According to the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association, 13 Pennsylvania providers were affected, tying Texas for the highest state total. Officials linked the targeted providers to more than 5,000 drivers who later failed English Language Proficiency requirements during roadside inspections.
Separate July investigations examined nearly 400 providers across 40 states, finding improperly licensed instructors, inadequate training spaces, and missing student assessment records. Those investigations produced more than 160 notices of proposed removal. Federal officials also announced a nationwide audit of third-party CDL skills testers.
For students and employers, these findings highlight why choosing a training provider requires looking beyond tuition and a promised completion date. Instructor qualifications, meaningful practice, accurate records, and demonstrated skills all matter.

Before enrolling or paying for employee training, ask a provider to explain its current Training Provider Registry status, applicable state authorization, instructor qualifications, actual behind-the-wheel time, assessment process, and completion reporting. Request clear information about tuition, scheduling, and what happens if additional instruction is needed.
